Viral Dutch Moments This Week (Oct 26, 2026)

By Sidra Salman · October 26, 2026

This was one of those weeks where the Dutch news cycle did not slow down for anyone. A missing TV personality turned up in immigration records, a Eurovision shortlist leaked before anyone official confirmed it, the prime minister shared baby news on Instagram, and Amsterdam filled with dance fans for the biggest night of Amsterdam Dance Event. Here are the viral Dutch moments that actually mattered this week — with a clear line between what is confirmed and what is only reported.

1. Emile Ratelband: immigration records say he left Thailand for Laos

The story that dominated Dutch social media this weekend was the search for television personality Emile Ratelband. His family, including relatives in Phuket, had appealed publicly for information about his whereabouts and offered a €2,500 reward for help finding him.

On Saturday, October 24, Thailand's Immigration Bureau announced what its records actually show: Ratelband and a close friend, Natalia da Silva, entered Thailand through Suvarnabhumi Airport in December 2021 and stayed legally on visas. In late 2025, Ratelband crossed into Laos via a Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge. Natalia left Thailand the same day by air to a country in the Middle East. Immigration records show no return entry into Thailand for either of them since.

That is where the confirmed facts end and the questions begin. The Immigration Bureau says its investigation division is gathering more information to help the family, and it has ordered a nationwide check to confirm there was no unauthorized re-entry. Dutch media reported that a lawyer who previously represented Ratelband, Carlo Liefting, spoke with him on Wednesday, October 21, described their conversation as normal, and said Ratelband wants privacy and to be left alone. The family, meanwhile, says it has not been shown a reported welfare-check video from months earlier and still has no confirmed location for him or his two youngest children. Reports differ on his age, so treat any single age figure in this story with care.

What to take from this: the "missing in Thailand" framing is now outdated — the records say he left Thailand in late 2025. But "left Thailand" is not the same as "found." Until the family or an official source confirms a location, this story stays open, and it deserves to be reported that way.

2. Eurovision 2027: three names reported, none of them official

The second-biggest Dutch talking point this week was a report from Dutch outlet AD, picked up across Eurovision media, that three acts are in contention to represent the Netherlands at Eurovision 2027: Davina Michelle, indie-folk duo Tangarine, and rising star Marnix Emanuel. The Netherlands is returning to the contest in 2027 after boycotting the 2026 edition, with broadcaster NPO overseeing the selection.

Two things matter here. First, these names are reported, not announced. The same three acts were reportedly finalists in the internal selection for 2026 before the withdrawal, which makes them plausible, not confirmed. Second, Davina Michelle herself poured cold water on the idea in an interview with De Telegraaf this week, saying she does not know whether Eurovision fits into her schedule, with a spring tour already being planned for next year, and that the artist who takes the slot needs to be firm about their convictions on the conflict surrounding the event.

Translation: do not treat a shortlist leak as a selection. The official announcement, when it comes from NPO, is the news. Everything before that is a strong rumor with a famous name attached.

3. Prime Minister Rob Jetten and partner Nicolás Keenan are expecting a baby

On Monday, October 19, Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten announced on his personal Instagram account that he and his partner, Argentine field hockey international Nicolás Keenan, are expecting their first child with the help of a surrogate mother and an egg donor. Jetten wrote that "someone very special is on the way" and signed off with "See you in 2027, little one."

Jetten, 39, is the youngest prime minister in Dutch history, having taken office after his D66 party's unexpected election victory a year ago. His party said the surrogate mother and egg donor are Dutch friends of the couple who already have children of their own, that paying a surrogate is illegal in the Netherlands, and that the pregnancy was made possible through IVF care available in the Netherlands. The couple had planned to marry this summer but postponed the wedding after Jetten became prime minister. He plans to take a few days off when the baby is born, not a longer parental leave.

The post traveled fast because it was personal news shared directly, not through a press release. It is also a useful reminder of how Dutch political news now breaks: on Instagram first, in the papers second.

4. Amsterdam Dance Event: Guetta, Afrojack, and Armin take the ArenA

On Saturday, October 24, the Amsterdam Music Festival brought its biggest night of Amsterdam Dance Event to the Johan Cruijff ArenA, with David Guetta headlining his "The Monolith" show. The lineup around him was a roll call of Dutch dance royalty: Afrojack, Armin van Buuren, D-Block & S-te-Fan, and more, playing to a crowd of around 40,000.

For Dutch music fans, the real story is the home-field one. Afrojack and Armin van Buuren are not guests at this festival — they are its backbone, year after year. AMF is where the Dutch dance scene shows its scale to the world, and this year's edition, with Guetta's arena-scale production at the center, was no exception. If you follow Dutch DJs, this was their week, and our earlier roundup of Dutch DJs at ADE 2026 is the place to catch up on the rest of the festival.

5. Junior Eurovision: Maria sings first for the Netherlands

With the Junior Eurovision 2026 final days away in Ta' Qali, Malta, Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS confirmed its broadcast plans: the final airs on NPO 3, with commentary from Bart Arens and Matheu Hinzen. Maria represents the Netherlands with "Stronger Together," a song about unity written by Mell Jonk and Ton Dijkman, with lyrics in Dutch and English — and she performs in slot number 1.

Opening the show is a tough draw for any young performer, but it is also the slot everyone remembers first. The Netherlands is the only country to have taken part in every Junior Eurovision since 2003, and its only win came in 2009 with Ralf Mackenbach's "Click Clack." Maria's performance is the one to watch this week.

6. Famke Janssen will star in a Dutch thriller — with both her sisters

Screen Daily reported this week that Famke Janssen, known worldwide for X-Men and Taken, will star in a new Dutch thriller called The Hero, directed by her sister Antoinette Beumer and written by her other sister Marjolein Beumer. It is the first time all three sisters have worked together on a film, and Janssen's first starring role in a Dutch feature.

Based on Jessica Durlacher's novel, the film follows a Holocaust survivor who seeks revenge after masked men break into her house, shoot her husband, and assault her in the woods. Janssen said the sisters had always talked about making a movie together, and that it feels great to star in a Dutch film for once. For Dutch film fans, this is a genuine event: a Hollywood name coming home for a family-made film.

7. Virgil van Dijk's 100th cap — and a Dutch win over Serbia

On the pitch, Liverpool and Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk collected his 100th international cap before the Netherlands' 2-1 win over Serbia, walking onto the pitch with his son for the ceremony. He then played the full 90 minutes, with his dummy helping set up Teun Koopmeiners' opener from a free kick. Dutch media were split on the performance — some rated Van Dijk a six out of ten and called the display unconvincing — but the result kept the Netherlands top of their Nations League group, unbeaten.

Van Dijk's milestone matters beyond one match. A hundred caps for the Oranje puts him in rare company, and doing it as captain, with his son beside him, is the kind of image that travels further than any match report. How to read a viral week like this one

Three of this week's biggest stories show the same pattern. A real document (immigration records), a real post (Jetten's Instagram), and a real leak (the Eurovision shortlist) each traveled further than the caveats attached to them. The habit that helps: ask whether the source is the person, the paper, or the rumor. Immigration records and an Instagram post from the person himself are primary. A shortlist "reported by" one outlet is not an announcement, no matter how many sites repeat it. This week rewarded the readers who waited one extra day for the second report — and it usually does.
