Frans Duijts Heart Attack: 6 Weeks Rest, Shows Canceled

Empty concert stage under a single warm spotlight with a lone microphone stand, a somber tribute scene honoring Dutch singer Frans Duijts

Frans Duijts is recovering from an acute heart attack. The 47-year-old Dutch folk singer was struck at home on Tuesday evening, in the presence of his family. His wife Marloes acted immediately and called emergency services. Thanks to that quick response, doctors treated him in time, and the damage to his heart has remained limited. His management announced the news on Thursday, October 22, 2026.

I've covered Dutch showbiz for years, and this one landed like a punch. Frans is one of those artists you picture on stage with a smile — which is why a heart attack at just 47 feels so jarring. Here's everything we know, verified across Dutch media, plus a look at who Frans is and what happens next.

What happened on Tuesday night

According to his management, the heart attack happened at Frans's home while his family was with him. He suddenly began to feel seriously unwell. His wife Marloes didn't hesitate — she called emergency services right away. That speed was crucial: at a heart attack, every minute counts, and Frans received the right medical care in time.

On Thursday, his team said his condition was stable and he was no longer in life-threatening danger. His manager told Shownieuws that Frans might be allowed home on Thursday evening or Friday — encouraging, though the road back is long: at least six weeks of complete rest.

The statement from 25 Management

The news came Thursday via a statement posted on Frans's official Instagram account by his management, 25 Management:

"The past week, Frans Duijts was struck by an acute heart attack. Thanks to the quick and adequate action of his family and the emergency responders, he received the right medical care in time and the damage has remained limited. The coming period is entirely devoted to his recovery. To let this run as well as possible, complete rest is necessary. Frans's family asks the media to respect his privacy and give him the rest and space he needs right now. We thank everyone in advance for their understanding and support."

The statement also stressed that no further medical information will be shared for now. The family is giving no specifics about his treatment — and I won't be guessing at causes. That's the family's business, not the internet's.

Six weeks of rest: shows canceled

The six-week rest order has immediate consequences for Frans's packed schedule. His management confirmed that every performance in that period is canceled. Two dates were named:

  • Sunday afternoon, November 1 — a show in Tilburg, canceled
  • Friday, November 27 — his appearance at Vrienden voor het leven, the Dutch-language music festival, canceled

Fans who already had tickets will have to do without him for now. When he'll return depends entirely on his recovery and his doctors' advice. For ticket holders: keep an eye on the venue or ticket seller for refund or rescheduling information, and give the man time.

Who is Frans Duijts?

For US readers who don't know him: Frans Duijts is one of the Netherlands' best-known volkszangers — folk singers whose catchy, singalong songs fill party tents and theaters across the country. He grew up in a close-knit traveler community and has been performing for more than 25 years.

His big breakthrough came in 2008 with a cover of AndrĂ© Hazes's "Jij denkt maar dat jij alles mag van mij" — a Top 40 hit that played in every Dutch pub that year, followed by an even bigger Top 20 follow-up, "Komt Er Voor Mij Dan Ook 'n Dag." His debut album Zo Ben Ik Mezelf went gold, and in 2009 he received the award for the most-played Dutch-language hit in pubs and restaurants. He has been with his wife Marloes for roughly 30 years, and they have three daughters.

He's also the kind of singer whose livelihood is the stage — fairs, festivals, and theaters, all year round. If you follow Dutch pop like Floor Jansen's solo career or Dutch music stars on tour, you know how intense that schedule is.

A health journey years in the making

What makes this story hit harder is how hard Frans has worked on his health. In 2002, while working as a demolition contractor, he fell through an asbestos roof and plunged about ten meters, breaking both legs and a vertebra. He nearly died and spent a long time in rehabilitation.

Years later, in 2019, he underwent a gastric sleeve operation and lost roughly 50 kilos. This past June he told Shownieuws he still struggled with his self-image — "I still feel like I'm 140 kilos," he said.

Then came early October and the release of his biography Vallen & Opstaan (Fall & Rise), presented on October 6 in an emotional evening that left him visibly moved. Written by Party reporter Andries Jelle de Jong, the book tells his whole story — the success, but also a severe burnout, years of heavy drinking, tensions in his marriage, his father's death, and his eldest daughter Jolanda's struggles with mental health, shared with her permission. He admitted in interviews that in his darkest period he sometimes drank six liters of Bacardi in a week.

So the book closed one chapter with rare honesty — and now this heart attack has forced open another. On the medical side: his wife's fast action limited the damage, and he's stable. The rest is between him and his doctors.

Support is pouring in — and a request for privacy

Since the announcement, messages of support have been streaming in from fans and fellow Dutch stars. The family has thanked everyone in advance for the kindness — and paired that gratitude with a clear request: please respect Frans's privacy and give him the rest and space he needs right now.

That's the line I'll hold on this blog too. No speculation, no digging — just wishing him a full recovery. If you want to keep up with this week's Dutch entertainment news in the meantime, there's plenty happening elsewhere in showbiz.

Get well soon, Frans.
